On Nov 15, the four committees from NJ's
special legislative session released
proposals for reforms in property taxes,
school funding, pensions & benefits, and
consolidation of government services.
Nearly one hundred proposals were
outlined in very general reports that
lacked the details necessary to fully
evaluate their potential impact on state
and local budget politics.
But two things
are clear: 1) many of these proposals
are seriously flawed and could
especially harm public schools and 2)
legislative leaders are planning to rush
these proposals through before the end
of the year with limited public input
and discussion.
NJ's state
senators and assembly members need to
hear from their constituents now urging:
- Full
hearings and open public discussion
of all proposals to change the
school funding system or revise the
state's property tax policies. Don't
rush to adopt quick fix measures
that will only deepen NJ's budget
crises.
- Say no to
proposals that cut property taxes at
the expense of schools and children.
