Re: Prescription Drug Negotiations

BlueWaveNJ, a grassroots organization for progressive government in your district, urges you to vote for HR4, a bi-partisan bill to require the government to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies to achieve lower drug prices – but we also urge you to amend it to include everyone who must pay for prescriptions out of his/her own pocket (obviously those on private insurance prescription plans have their own negotiators). As the bill is currently structured, these negotiations would be only for seniors and those with disabilities in the Medicare program.

What about the rest of us? Almost every other country in the world has access to American-made prescription drugs at costs lower than average Americans pay. Once again, middle-class Americans are assisting pharmaceutical companies in earning large profits. Our government should tackle this as one aspect of an overall healthcare reform program that ultimately results in universal healthcare. This is a big step from where we are now, but if we can at least get our prescription drug costs on par with what the rest of the world pays, it is a start.

So, please amend the bill to be more inclusive, and pass HR4. Thank you for your attention.
