A panel of distinguished
experts give their views on the efficacy of US policy in the
past, current prospects for peace and advice for the next US
administration. Our panelists include: Scott Lasensky, co-author
of Negotiating Arab-Israeli Peace and current vice president of
the Center for Conflict Analysis and Prevention; Nadia Hijab,
Senior Fellow and co-director of the DC-based Institute for
Palestine Studies; and Daniel levy, director of the Prospects
for Peace Initiative at the Century Foundation and former senior
advisor and member of the negotiating team to several Israeli
governments.
The moderator for this forum - New Jersey and Montclair's own Mary Alice Williams who is an
award winning writer, anchor, correspondent and television host.
MODERATOR:
MARY ALICE WILLIAMS
is one of the most esteemed names in network news. She rose
to prominence of one of the founding anchors of CNN and
served on Vice President in charge of its New York Bureau,
becoming one of the highest ranking female executives in
American television. She joined NBC News in 1989 and became
the first woman to win a notional Emmy Award for anchoring
an evening newscast. She has written and hosted highly
acclaimed specials for PBS, ABC, and Lifetime, and has won
numerous awards for her work in television, radio, and
interactive media. She is recognized today as one of the
most important voices covering foreign policy, ethics,
technology, and health.
PANELISTS:
SCOTT LASENSKY
is offing vice president and senior research associate at
the Center for Conflict Analysis and Prevention (
http://www.usip.org/cap/index.html ) . He has lectured
and written extensively on the Arab-Israeli conflict and
America's role in the Middle East. He is also the director
of the Institute’s Iraq and Its Neighbors Project (http://www.usip.org/iraq/neighbors/).
Besides teaching at Georgetown University, he is a fellow at
the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and the
Brookings Institution. He is a frequent commentator on the
BBC, CNN, Fox News, NPR, and other major media outlets.
Lasensky recently co-authored Negotiating Arab-Israel Peace
with former Ambassador Daniel Kurtzer.
Nadia Hijab is Senior Fellow of
the Institute for Palestine Studies, and co-director of its
Washington, D.C. office. The Institute is an independent
non-profit research organization whose flagship Journal of
Palestine Studies is a leading resource on the Israeli-Arab
conflict. She was Editor-in-Chief of the London-based Middle
East magazine before moving to New York where she served at the
UN as a senior development officer. Hijab is a past president of
the Association of Arab American University Graduates. She has
written a book about Arab women and work and co-authored another
on Palestinians in Israel.
Daniel Levy
is a Senior Fellow
and Director of the Prospects for Peace Initiative at The
Century Foundation and a Senior Fellow and Director of the
Middle East Initiative at the New America Foundation. He has
been a senior advisor to several Israeli administrations. He was
a member of the official Israeli delegation to the Taba
negotiations, and previously served on the negotiating team to
the “Oslo B” Agreement in 1995 under Prime Minister Rabin. He
was the lead Israeli drafter of the Geneva Initiative.
